Description
WHAT IS NUANS?
NUANS® is a computerised search system that compares a proposed corporate name or trademark with databases of existing corporate bodies and trademarks. The NUANS® system is owned and operated by Industry Canada and contains a national database of trademarks and business names that are in use by other organisations.
Conducting a NUANS® search compares your proposed business name to the names of registered businesses in the NUANS® database. A NUANS® report will list organisations that have a business name similar to the one you proposed.
A NUANS® report will also reserve your name for 90 days.
Please note: The Federal and Provincial Registrars have the final say on accepting business names, regardless of the information presented in the NUANS® report.
HOW DO I CHOOSE A NAME FOR MY BUSINESS?
A business name consists of a distinctive element, ie. “Acme” and a descriptive element, ie. “Grocery Store” that indicates the goods or service you offer.
The more unique your business name is, the more likely it will be approved.
It is not recommended that you choose only initials (ie. ABC) or any names that could be confused with Government entities.
We offer 3 FREE pre-searches to help determine if your name is available by querying the Industry Canada database. (Pre-searches are not NUANS® searches). Additional pre-searches are available for a nominal fee.
